PUPPY TALES

When a call for help came from the local animal shelter the inmates at the Daviess County Detention Center were ready to open their hearts and give a helping hand. Four distressed newborn puppies were in critical need of 24 hour care. The DCDC Substance Abuse Program already experts at caring for dogs in need of love, attention and training was chosen by Jailer David Osborne for the job.

Monday evening the puppies arrived along with four other siblings who were on their way to another foster home. Ashley Clark, Director of the Daviess County Animal Shelter, and Marisa Blades had 35 inmates gathered around them as they taught the men how to bottle feed, clean and care for the puppies. The inmates also learned that the puppies were from a litter of ten whose mother became critically ill shortly after their birth and two puppies had already passed away.
After numerous two hour feedings, daily baths and lots of sleep along with some TLC three of the puppies were showing improvement. The littlest one however was not doing well.

She was unable to take the bottle and was being fed with a needleless syringe. Despite the extensive care she received she died Tuesday night. The inmates gave her the name Nevaeh, heaven spelled backwards.
The other female puppy Serenity and the two male puppies, Big Tony and Rebos, (sober spelled backwards) have settled into a routine. The puppies share a dorm with six men and sleep in a cozy blanket lined tote under the bunk of their primary caregiver. With their eyes just beginning to open, the little ones are not shy about letting everyone know they are hungry. Once the crying starts, attention is needed immediately. Five excited dogs being fostered for the S.P.A.R.K.Y. program are the first to arrive. With perked up ears and inquisitive eyes, they wait patiently to see what is going to happens next.
